Parents Guide To Focus Volleyball
What can players
expect to receive?
Uniform
Warm-up
shirt
Coaching
Weekly gym time for practice
2-3 tournaments and a provincial championships
tournament
Membership
with Volleyball BC (including insurance and magazine)
When do they play?
Unlike
many sports where teams play one game, once a week,
volleyball uses a tournament schedule. Tournaments are
usually one or two day events (depending on the level
and location). A listing of some of the key
tournaments can be found on our Tournaments page. The average number of
matches
played at a tournament is 6.
My child plays
soccer on the weekend?
It’s not
uncommon for our children to play more than one sport. What
is nice about the tournament format is that your child may
have to miss a match at the tournament, but will be back
for the remaining matches.
What additional
equipment will my child need?
Knee pads
are a good idea as are court or volleyball shoes.
Volleyball requires some quick foot work and sometimes
the gym floors have slippery spots.
We supply
the team uniform and in some cases matching shorts. The
club does offer hoodies and warm-up pants. This is an
additional charge and they can be ordered at the
beginning of the season.
Should we expect
extra costs?
Some teams
will incur additional expenses, particularly at the
older age groups. As the kids develop their skill level
the coach may want to attend extra tournaments, out of town tournaments,
book extra practice time or travel to the Nationals. On
the upside, we have experience at this and are very good
at keeping the costs down.
I hear a lot about
“Nationals”, what are they?
The
National Championships are an open tournament held every
year. Your child's team doesn’t have to qualify for the National
tournament, but you do have to make a commitment early.
The tournament books up quickly and so do the on-site
residences. Teams attending Nationals not being
held locally can expect an extra expense of $600 or so
(tournament fees, accommodations, travel expenses, food
etc.). |
